Dear Reader, Issue 22

On September 18, 2020, we launched the first issue of Niv. We were green-keen editing bees, both still in our twenties, who entered this endeavour like freshmen enter high school: wide-eyed. We hoped to create an environment where all who wished to explore the rich Jewish arts and cultural landscape in Canada and abroad felt welcomed, and where writers and artists could express the full spectrum of their Jewishness. Over the last four years, we have strived to uphold this mandate and embody what the name of our magazine, in Hebrew, means: expression.

We’ve tried to open the door on the Jewish experience for Ashkenaz, Mizrahi, and Sephardic Jews, to highlight the rich and vibrant traditions and cultural practices that form the Jewish experience. For many, Jewish law and Torah have not felt inclusive, and though we are an arts and culture magazine, we feature words from rabbis and religious leaders so we can share in their wisdom on how to expand our collective thinking to make more people feel included and accepted in Judaism. We hope we have shown our readers the creativity, ingenuity, and multitude of talent from community organizations, artists, and writers—all aiming to make this world culturally beautiful and magical.

As we approach another anniversary, our unwavering dedication to be a home for Jewish expression, remains the same, if not greater. Because of you. Whether you are here for the first time or have been with us from the beginning, we thank you for your support. It means the world to us to be in community and conversation with you. In Canada, the Jewish community is strong, but the media scene is scarce. While we have a handful of wonderful publications, there were many voices and perspectives that didn’t have the right platform to shine or to shine a light on. It has been a humbling experience watching Niv grow and it has been an absolute joy to offer a platform for Jewish creatives and community makers.

Come September 18, 2024, Niv will be four. Issue 22 pays tribute to all the playful, tough, complicated, fun, absurd, stories that have crystallized Niv into what it is today and has helped us reach this new chapter. What stories it will hold, time will only tell, but one thing is certain, we will be here, continuing to embrace all the Jewish joy, and occasional kvetching, our community savours unpacking.

Here is to a new year of love and storytelling!

Warmest,

Clarrie & Orly
