As warmer weather graces our day-to-day lives, we’re thrilled to bring you a little extra treat with the launch of Issue 14. Perhaps you’ll even be reading Niv from the beach.
This issue explores timely topics like the war in Ukraine, Pride, and Mother’s Day, with all pieces offering incredibly varied emotion and tone. Like our collage cover which compiles a smattering of various images of nature, pop culture, and Jewish goodies, we wanted to show the full breadth of what life has to offer. Every day there are joyful, poignant, disheartening, and difficult moments. It can feel overwhelming but when put together in a composite, like this collage, it can be beautiful to see.
We wanted to reflect on the war in Ukraine and highlight organizations doing meaningful work to help those suffering from conflict. Project Kesher, an independent, feminist, and pluralist nonprofit organization, is forging Jewish community and connection for women living in post-Communist societies in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova, Georgia, and for those who have made aliyah (from any of these countries) to Israel. Now, the organization is assisting any who are displaced from the war. You’ll also hear from Ukrainian Jewish Encounter, a Canadian charitable nonprofit organization, founded in 2008 to deepen the understanding of the breadth, complexity, and diversity of Ukrainian-Jewish relations over the centuries, with a view towards a more connected future.
June is around the corner, and we are celebrating Pride with several pieces. While Niv strives to integrate LGBTQ+ content and promote LGBTQ+ artists, writers, and organizations year-round it’s important to also celebrate the vibrant community during Pride. Rabbi Micah Buck-Yael reinterpets religious text to show that the LGBTQ+ community has always been in sacred writing, the Ontario Jewish Archives takes us through the compelling history of the Jewish LGBTQ+ community in Toronto, and our Pride is the Mood board is back with beautiful art, poetry, and performance.
Lastly, we wanted to take a moment to say Happy Mother’s Day to all the mother figures. To celebrate the day the Ontario Jewish Archives has pulled together an incredible photo essay of impressive female figures from history and a local collection of contemporary photos and messages of love to mothers.
We hope this issue provides you with joy—the collage cover should at least spark some animated fun—and allow you to reflect on communities at home and abroad who are experiencing tremendous hardship.
