We can’t believe the end of 2021 is just around the corner. This year has brought on the incredible medical advancements of the vaccine, but we’re not out of the woods yet, and hope the upcoming winter proves to be safe for everyone.
This issue coincides with the celebration of Hanukkah, and commemoration of Holocaust Education Week (which happened during the first week of November). Our cover displays stained glass from a synagogue shining brightly in a dark space. The story of Hanukkah is one of Jewish resilience in times of adversity, while the Holocaust is a period of unimaginable horror and pain. However, through the millenia, the Jewish people have shown tremendous perseverance; always managing to find the light in the darkest recesses of our history.
In Issue 11, you will find some incredible series’ with the Ontario Jewish Archive’s photos and primary documents of Jews who arrived in Canada during and after the Holocaust, delicious recipes from members of the global Jewish community for our Hanukkah Recipe Box, and the beautiful artwork from the participants at DANI. And, Rabbi Keilah Lebell reminds us what a shmita year can bring.
We are continuously humbled by the work being done in the Jewish community at home in Canada and abroad. So many people actively work to improve our Jewish and non-Jewish communities, and Niv will continue to be a platform for their work.
