Black Cat Judaica is committed to making high quality textiles for Jewish observance. Our goal is to make hiddur mitzvah accessible to all Jews, regardless of financial status. The harmful, antisemitic stereotype of Jewish wealth is internalized in many Jewish circles. This means that working class and poor Jews are often deprived of “quintessential” Jewish experiences and opportunities due to financial barriers. We hope to help remove those barriers around ritual objects by offering a pay-what-you can pricing system.
All of the textiles we make are woven by hand on 18th to 19th century hand looms. This means that we can put kavanah into every piece. My tallitot are woven with a fine 100% wool, or a wool/silk blend from Jagger Spun in Springvale, Maine. My tallitot ktanot (tzitzit) and challah cloths are made from linen or a cotton/linen blend from Maurice Brassard in Plessisville, Quebec. All of my tzitzis are hand spun at home with wool from local sheep.
I have a small inventory of premade Judaica, and also take custom orders. My stock items are handwoven with the same care and kavanah as my custom orders. We specialize in tallitot, but we also make challah cloths, kippot, al netilat towels, Torah mantles, and more. Visit the shop on our website, to view and order our standard inventory. If you have a special project in mind, or even if you’re looking for a standard design with a twist, please feel free to contact me directly via email. I would love to work with you to create the perfect addition to your Jewish practice.
