“6 million ascending”/Aaron Koster/Pastel and pencil on paper.

I drew 6 million ascending because I find it comforting to believe that if angels exist, they would have been able to carry those innocent souls to a better place.

“Fade to Black”/Aaron Koster/Pastel and pencil on paper.

In “Fade to Black,” I imagined Anne Frank peering out of a window from the house in Amsterdam where she and her family hid. The sky, birds, a chestnut tree, gave some relief from the insanity swirling around her. She was fifteen when she died in Bergen-Belsen in 1945.

“Menorah”/Aaron Koster/Pastel and pencil on paper.

I am not religious, but have always retained my sense of Jewishness. A menorah, Torah, and Hasidim dancing are some of the symbols of Judaism that I identify with. I was raised in an Ashkenazi, Orthodox Jewish home. The music, humour, traditions, lokshen kugel, gefilte fish, matzo-ball soup, challah, hamantaschen, folk tales, Sholem Aleichem, Isaac Bashevis Singer, are a few of my favourite things about Yiddishkeit. Have I mentioned the food?
